Overview

BiomEdit (www.biomedit.com) is an animal health biotechnology company that leverages a unique platform combining the leading science of the microbiome with synthetic biology to innovate novel animal health products to address challenges in livestock production and pet health.

Position Summary: BiomEdit is seeking a highly motivated MS/PhD student to support and execute experiments for the development of genetic toolkits for native, rumen microbes and for engineered microbes for in situ delivery of bioactives to significantly improve sustainability in livestock production.

The Intern will use his/her skills and knowledge in (Anaerobic) Microbiology, Synthetic Biology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology to design and execute experiments to advance the development of genetic toolkits for native microbes and engineering of microbial chassis strains for in situ production and secretion of biological payloads.

Functions, Duties, Tasks:

  • Deep understanding and experience in strain engineering, molecular biology, and synthetic biology. This includes construction of suicide/shuttle vectors, DNA transformation/conjugation, strain selection/counterselection and screening.
  • Support the development of genetic systems for non-model anaerobes and strain engineering for optimized expression and secretion of target biomolecules.
  • Perform assays to evaluate the level of protein expression and secretion (e.g. Luminescence/fluorescence assays, Western blot).
  • Some experience working with anaerobes and familiar with anaerobic techniques.
  • Maintain and keep track of engineered strains inventory.
  • Keep abreast of scientific literature in synthetic biology and strain engineering fields.
  • Excellent record keeping.
  • Actively support a culture of high accountability.
  • Data analysis and presentation.

Minimum Qualification (education, experience and/or training, required certifications):

  • Second year of MS-, third year of Ph.D.- student, or recent MS/Ph.D. graduate in microbiology, biochemistry, synthetic biology, or related fields with research experience in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiome science, and strain engineering.

Additional Preferences:

  • Working experience with automation systems (e.g. liquid handler, automated DNA extraction platforms).
  • Strong data analysis skills (e.g. R studio, RNAseq, Geneious, and omics analyses).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • High personal ethical and quality standards.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
