Geology and Geoscience

Degree Focus

Did you know that Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that protects us from solar winds? This is just one of the many unique characteristics that makes our planet particularly suitable to sustain life. The study of geology and geophysics is centered around exploring all of Earth’s unique qualities—increasing our understanding of the composition, structure, history and processes. Such knowledge is vital to addressing societal needs and problems such as locating and characterizing energy, mineral and groundwater resources, assessing seismic and other geologic hazards and evaluating and remediating environmental contamination. Students pursuing this field of study will learn the foundations of chemistry, biology, physics and math with a specialization in plate tectonics, Earth materials, seismology and hydrology.

Additional Degrees & Concentrations

(Concentration) - Environmental geoscience degree concentrations focus on the interactions between humans and the geologic environment. This field of study combines foundational elements of geology, chemistry atmospheric science, math, biology and physics—preparing its students to apply these principles to solve environmental challenges, like climate change.

(Concentration) - Geographic Information Science (GIS) concentrations focus on this rapidly evolving industry assessing geographical information and data to propel many industries, like agriculture, forward; its use has billion-dollar implications for both businesses and governments. Coursework generally includes classes in natural and human social systems, applied geography and cartography. Graduates can expect to work as part of multidisciplinary teams—in both government and private sectors--using their skills and data to create maps, integrate information, visualize scenarios, resolve complex issues and present ideas.
(Concentration) - Hydrology degree concentration focus on the properties of Earth’s water—specifically as it relates to groundwater movement and systems. Students pursuing this degree concentration will explore topics of chemistry, groundwater principles, geochemistry, geomorphology and mathematics. Graduates will use this expertise in application toward the protection of our most precious natural water sources.
