Degree Focus

Physics encompasses the study of matter, motion, space and time; this comprehensive field can be as simple as learning how a ball rolls downhill or as complex as trying to uncover the unifying theory of the universe. Physics programs focus on the properties and nature of matter and energy—covering topics including mechanics, heat, radiation, light, sound, electricity and magnetism. Advanced coursework will depend upon a student’s desired concentration and may include subjects like thermodynamics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, electrodynamics and geophysics. Graduates can look forward to a variety of career opportunities including mechanical engineering, meteorology, aeronautics, research, education and military development.

Additional Degrees & Concentrations

(BS) - Engineering physics programs focus on understanding how to harness the laws of physics to solve pressing engineering problems and improve engineering processes. Coursework may include particle physics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and nanotechnology. Graduates can look forward to working at the forefront of technology either nationally or within the private sector and/or pursue advanced graduate degrees within the field.

(BS/Minor/Concentration) - Biophysics is the study of how biological processes are impacted by the natural laws of physics. Students can expect to study the quantitative sciences of physics, math, and chemistry to better understand living organisms-- ranging from how parts of a cell move and function, to how plant cells capture light and transform into energy, to how complex human system such as the brain, nerves and immune system function.

(BS) - Physics and electrical engineering dual degree programs combine the research skills and fundamental knowledge of a physics major with the design and application skills of an electrical engineer. Coursework may include calculus, modern physics, micro processing systems and electrical design. Graduates will be well prepared problem solvers—and can look forward to careers in both engineering and research and development realms.
