Degree Focus

Throughout the ages, one constant has been the prominence of food in our lives. Central to not only existence, food plays a significant societal role—core of celebrations, demonstrating appreciation and creativity. The field of food science is a multidisciplinary approach—combining biology, chemistry and other science disciplines to learn and apply what it takes to take to bring safe, affordable food and beverages to the masses. Coursework may include core subjects like chemistry, microbiology and economics, as well as focused studies food development, production, distribution, flavor and regulation. Students will be able to pursue careers in food product development, food research and science, regulatory compliance and food technology.

Additional Degrees & Concentrations

(BS/Minor) - Food and nutrition degrees combine knowledge about food development regulation and science with the study of nutrition, sales and marketing. Studies may include chemistry, microbiology, food science, economics and nutrition – giving students a firm foundation upon which to pursue food-related roles in a variety of industries and organizations.

(Minor) - A minor in global food and ag systems provides students with in-depth knowledge surrounding the global development of food and agriculture systems, associated food policy and regulation and sustainability principles and best practices. Graduates can look forward to pursuing careers in agriculture, government agencies, food development and much more.

(Minor) - Fermentation science degrees focus on the use of microorganisms as processing agents in wine, beer and other fermented foods. Microbiology and chemistry skills will be an important component of introductory coursework, with advanced studies focusing on processing, food product development, preservation and quality analysis. Graduates are able to pursue careers in cheesemaking, winemaking, brewing and in regulatory agencies.

(Cert) - A certification in food studies provides students a firm foundation in the science of food from a variety of perspectives – health, conservation and consumption, culture, politics and economics.

(BS) - A degree in sustainable food systems provides students deep knowledge into the critical role sustainability plays to our food supply and food production methods. Areas of study may include low to no input farming, organic food production and urban agriculture.
